Another Sunday on Big Ugly Creek. The phone is working today, and I can actually get through to the web.
I live too far out to get a newspaper delivered so I read the NY Times Magazine. William Safire tells me
about Blogger.com, and I feel adventurous.
I also need something to keep me from doing some work that needs to be done. This seems far more interesting. My nephew ( a well-off member of the hip-wa-zee) told me about blogging about a year ago.
I never had a chance to check it out. THANK YOU WILLIAM SAFIRE.
I live in a "VOLUNTEER HOUSE" on Big Ugly Creek. I am with VISTA. Volunteers in Service to America (the domestic peace corps). I share the house with another VISTA, a young lady from New Mexico. We
are currently hosting a young man from a local University who is here to provide sports/recreation programs
for our 5 week summer camp program at the Big Ugly Community Center.
While I am impressed with the young people's passion, energy and sense of humor, there is definitely
a gulf between us. I find that things that I think happened just a few years ago, happened before they were
born.
However they respect my many abilities. So far the thing that impresses my young lady fellow VISTA
is that I know how to make popcorn without a microwave. On the other hand she knows what FTP means.
We were both assigned to the area by VISTA with a Technology workplan. We find this rather amusing
as we were both English Majors. Nevertheless we toil away trying to make outdated donated equipment work. Our organization was recently able to purchase 3 up to date computers. They are networked
on one phone line at the Big Ugly Community Center. This is very exciting. It may not seem like a lot
but this is a county that has only one traffic light.
